Start beneath the surface: waterproofing matters most

No tile, however premium, is waterproof on its own. Tiles and grout form a hard-wearing finished surface, but moisture can still pass through grout joints, movement cracks and poorly sealed corners. A high-quality waterproofing membrane beneath the tiles is therefore the foundation of a durable bathroom.

In shower enclosures, wet rooms and areas around baths, a cementitious or liquid-applied waterproofing system should be installed over a properly prepared substrate. The membrane needs to continue into corners, around pipe penetrations and across the shower floor, with compatible sealing tapes and collars used at vulnerable junctions. This detail is not glamorous, but it is the work that prevents water from travelling into walls, floors and neighbouring rooms.

For flooring, select a finish with enough slip resistance for the location. Highly polished porcelain can look striking on a feature wall but may be less suitable for a shower room floor, especially in a family home. Large-format tiles create a calmer, more contemporary appearance and reduce the number of grout joints, although they require an exceptionally flat substrate and precise installation.

Smaller porcelain mosaics remain an excellent option on shower floors. Their additional grout lines provide grip and allow the tile to follow the falls towards the drain more easily. The trade-off is that there is more grout to maintain, so a good-quality grout and a sensible cleaning routine are essential.

Natural stone needs informed selection and care

Natural marble, limestone and travertine can bring depth and individuality that manufactured finishes cannot fully replicate. Choose bathroom cabinetry that will not swell

Bathroom joinery is frequently where humidity causes the most visible damage. Standard MDF, chipboard and poorly finished timber products may look acceptable when first installed, but exposed edges and unsealed cut-outs can absorb moisture. Over time, doors expand, laminate lifts and drawer fronts lose alignment.

For vanity units and fitted storage, moisture-resistant boards with properly sealed edges provide a more reliable base.
